The Free Clinic of Franklin County bestowed its 2011 Volunteer of the Year award on Barbara Fetting of Penhook.  Mrs. Fetting began volunteering at the Free Clinic in 2010 after learning about the clinic from then board member and neighbor, John Boyle.  Last year, she logged in over 100 hours at the clinic.  “The clinic’s services are important to the community, especially in this economy,” says Fetting.

Barbara Fetting is adept at helping clinic staff double-check patient records and pharmacy pick-ups, registering patients, answering phones, helping with fundraising events, and providing a variety of office tasks.  Even her hobbies benefit the Free Clinic.  One of Fetting’s quilts decorates the waiting room of the Free Clinic located at 490 South Main Street, one block south of the hospital in Rocky Mount.  Another quilted work of art became the grand prize in the clinic’s last raffle.  “I love volunteering at the clinic.  I really feel appreciated here,” said Fetting.

“Barbara is a unique volunteer.  She can (and does) wear many hats as a volunteer in the Clinic.  Her services are invaluable.  For every hour someone volunteers, it saves the clinic money that can be applied to services for the uninsured in Franklin County.  The most recent assessment shows that for every dollar donated (or saved via volunteer services), the Clinic provides $7.45 in services!  Barbara’s 100 hours at $15/hour equates to $11,175 in services we provided.  THANK YOU, BARBARA!” said Lois MacDonald, executive director of the Free Clinic.

Barbara Fetting and her husband retired to the Penhook area in 2007.  Barbara was a systems analyst in the Baltimore/D.C. metro area for many years.  She has two sons and a grand-daughter.  Fetting also volunteers as a webmaster for the alumnae association at her alma mater, Smith College.

Volunteers are critical to the success of non-profit groups such as the Free Clinic of Franklin County.  In 2011, 50 volunteers clocked nearly 1,700 hours at the clinic.  MacDonald shares, “The clinic is fortunate to have a number of dedicated medical volunteers to treat patients,” but also utilizes caring individuals for office work, labor, and raising funds.  Needs may be on-going or one-time.  For information on volunteer opportunities, call the Free Clinic at 540-483-7500.
